Zagaleta, Art Ambassadors Fru Tholstrup and Fabien Fryns presented a fine selection of works by the artist Firouz Farman Farmaian.
Everything in Salucci House seemed light enough to levitate and the pieces by Firouz, stood out. Persian-born artist Firouz Farman Farmaian, whose lifetime of living in exile in Paris, France profoundly influenced both his creative practice and individual character, “It is circumstance that ultimately shapes lives,” says the artist, whose work seeks to actively engage in a dialogue with the past. As such, his compositions possess a vivacious and spontaneous energy, as well as a deeply symbolic quality, which speaks to a multiplicity of currents in politics, art and philosophy, images to communicate a spirituality.
“The Chapel Series plant the last development of my Abstract Organic phase. A progression debuted in a Finnish retreat circa 2015, continued in Spain in the winter of 2017-2018 in Fabien Fryns’s Chapel residency program in the rolling hills of the Paraladé domains, in Andalucia. They invoke an intensifying connection to the natural world, I like to coin as post-expressionist impressionism.
Using heavy Sennelier oil pastel, Moroccan pigments, Majorelle blue from Yves Saint Laurent’s Marrakech mansion and 1970’s bed sheets I inherited – dating of our long gone Persian family home – I completed a collection of large Panels followed up by a couple of smaller pieces. The series mirror the ancient sacred spirit of the Chapel, the powerful Terracotta’s of decorator Jaime Parladé’s legendary villa, the light and profound greens of the surrounding province and the uncanny Belle époque feel of the domain.”
